Julia Tillinghast
they/them
“I found out I was pregnant with my second child just as I was finishing up my yoga teacher-training program, which sent me on a voyage of research, experimentation, learning, and discovery about the "do's" and "don'ts" of prenatal yoga and to trying creative ways of using my knowledge and experience to create a practice for my own pregnant body that was truly nourishing and rejected many cultural messages about the pregnant body and what it can and should do.
As a gender-non-binary birthing parent, I know that not all pregnant folks identify as women and I approach prenatal yoga from a queer perspective, which is really just one way that prenatal self-care and education can be more thoughtful and accessible for more of us, which is something most of us can benefit from.”
Julia Tillinghast is a gender non-binary writer and teacher from Michigan. They studied with Sarah Trelease and Renee Sills at Sola School of Contemplative Arts and received their 200-hour teaching certificate in 2016. They have taught yoga in a variety of settings, including schools, shelters and a senior center, as well as at a number of studios in Portland.
They specialize in prenatal and postnatal yoga and are interested in functional strength, evidence-based modern yoga and somatics, yoga for nervous-system care, Body/Mind Centering, and an eclectic variety of approaches to working with the body. Their practice and teaching are informed by esoteric traditions and contemplative somatic practice.
